Ask any pilot, they have been putting nitrogen in airplane tires for a long time now. Mostly because compressed air condensates and at 30'000ft that condensation tends to freeze and it could prove disasterouse for the wheels.
I did use it in the tires on my VTX and I never had a problem with tire pressure, but it is not that important to me to worry about and I never really noticed that much difference.

First of you got ripped off at $39.00. My dealer charged $7.00 per tire.

This is some info I found.

It becomes more of personal preference such as Ford over Chevy or Honda over Harley.

One thing that seems clear is that I should have more constant tire pressure, less corrosion on my aluminum wheels. Check out the links below.

I ran into the nitrogen thing several months back when I was new car shopping. They thought it was worth an extra $250.00!!! Had a hard time believing the sales pitch so I did some research. No sure but I think it was Consumer Reports that had an article on the stuff. The findings were when comparing a tire filled with regular air to one filled with nitrogen, the actual air loss was minimal at best and hardly worth the extra $$$ they are charging for the stuff.

Recently had mine done. 19.95 so 39.00 is overkill and I doubt I would have done it. They first took out nearly all the air, then filled with nitro. Then bled them again and filled agan with nitro. That gets the air and moisture out. Is it folklore, maybe... but for 20.00 bucks I figured what the hey.

I was thinking of going to hydrogen. A friend of a cousin of an uncle of mine said it would reduce the spinning mass of my wheels and increase my acceleration dramatically. The only downside I see is an occasional explosion.

At 39 bucks I wouldn't have tried it. For $7.00 a tire I thought what the heck. I wasted more money on other stuff.

When it's time for new skins the mileage on the old ones will tell me if I'll do it again.

With riding temps so different in Wisconsins 3 season riding I thought that was a plus as well.

Kinda reminds me of the "pet rock" thing several years ago. buy a rock in the box, or pick one up from the yard. hmmm, decisions.

kingkingking has a great point: air is already 79% nitrogen. As for johnnyp, it might make sense for jet tires, but my tires won't be freezing at 30,000 feet. I have to call BS on the nitrogen for tires.

I use Helium - makes the bike lighter...can go faster. (added bonus: can talk like cartoon duck)

There's your answer then. If you get your bike up to 30,000 FT, then you should use Nitrogen.
