A lot depends upon how much time you have to spend there. All the suggestions are good, but if you only have a day or two you'll want to prioritize.

Now I'm trying to find an alternative to the south exit since there's gravel. I want to go through the Teton's on the way south so I'm probably going to have to go for it. Using the west exit would be way out of our way and we're going to be pressed for time. We won't hit it until Sept 23 so maybe they'll have it fixed up by then? Probably not, huh?

Seems like the signs said they close the Beartooth for the year in October. Late September might be COLD!!

Pulled out my photo book

Taken on 9/27/08 at 7:13pm north part of Yellowstone - just before we got to Gardner..
One of the most fantastic Sunsets I have ever seen

Next day as we went over Beartooth - this snow was NOT on this day but can you say "Gerbings?" Wife wanted to see Yellowstone and the fall colors - have to admit, left HD home and took the Mini Cooper - too many days on the road up north and did not want to deal with snow... Turned out - it would have been fine as long as we had our Gerbings... Great product

Don't let the short sleeve fool ya,,, It was windy and Cold up on beartooth - but at that evevation - its to be expected... just dress accordingly and yo will be fine...
