Advice from the touring guys.....

I personally think it was a good deal. I did the same thing bought the 1999 Police Bike for $7500 and have spent another $2000 on upgrades and ITS PAID FOR. Its not the nicest bike in the group by far, but after the 95 inch kit and gear drive and cams, I can run off from any new stock street glide. I would LOVE to buy a brand new bike, but I ride mine every day also and put a lot of miles on it so when a new bike was 2 years old it would have as many miles as mine does now. Go for it and make it your own. And by the way, I love my police bags with the chrome pucks everybody laughs when I am running down the highway with the group and open the bag and get out a coke or pack of smokes!!!!

Rugby,
Your absolutly right...I certainly don't know about the internal workings or construction of the 02 engine or "any engine" for that matter, and didn't remotely mean to elude to the fact that I did. I certainly don't.
I was talking in terms of the 88 cubic inch motor vs the 96 inch motor and the Carbs VS the Fuel injection (although in hind sight I think in 02 you had a choice of either or) and somewhere in the back of my head the 6 gallon tank vs the 4.something...
I had no idea that the bearrings you mentioned were better than the current ones or that the 02 motor would outlast what they build now. I appreciate that info from a guy who knows. Thats what this site is all about.....learning from each other.
I stand corrected.
"Gliden,
What ENGINE improvements? The Cheaper bottom end? The cheaper bearings? The only improvements over a new bike is the frame, maybe...Maybe you should do a little more research. 2002 is the best year for the twin cam by far....The 96" motor will not last as long as the 02, period."

"Gliden,
Sorry, I re-read my post and I came off with a **** poor attitude. This is a place to learn and exchange ideas and I was out of line. Hopefully in our travels we will laugh over a cup of coffee or long necks...
Yes 02 has a beefed up swing arm but not as beefy as a 09 or 10's swing arm. The 6 gallon is nice, my budy has a new 09 SG but regrets selling his 02 had a much nicer ride. The 99 I have is not as efficient as the newer bikes on MPG and the 6 gallons kills it even more.
When they come back with the timken bearings and the forged bottom end, like they had in 02 with the delphi FI and hoping for oil cooled heads. If this happens, I will get rid of my MM FI bike. It runs great and walks a 96" but its a 95". I still rent the new bikes when I travel....

I would say go for it. I just bought an 06 SG with 23K on it. I bought it from the dealer where it was bought new and traded in on an 09 SG. I have all of the maintenance records and the upgrades, 103 kit, Reinharts ETC. Their was easily $24K spent on it to get it the way it is now and I only paid $13K. I can sleep much easier knowing I saved the difference in price form a new one. This is a photo of it with my 99 Heritage, the 99 has 100K on the clock and still runs great. Proper maintenance means more than age in my opinion.
