Default Speedo quit on my 02 FLHTC, need help

Hi folks. I have a 2002 FLHTC. While on a trip over this weekend the speedo/ odometer quit working. I was running down the highway 70mph when it started jumping around from 70 down to 60-50 0 and all over the place. After doing that for awhile it just quit reading and sat at 0. At the hotel that night I triedd pulling the sensor and wiping it off because that fixed it 2 years ago but not this time. I have about 46K miles on the bike.
Is there any way to "test" the speed sensor that sits in the tranny to verify it is bad?

It's bad, I had the exact same situation. Cleaning the shavings off worked once, but not twice. If my memory is correct, there is a way to test it in the service manual checking for resistances across the leads, but I don't recall the details. I'd just replace it with a new one and odds are the problem will be resolved.

Concur with Dawg and Eyesby, replace the sensor. You are very lucky to get by with that many miles and not having to change the sensor.

Default Speedo quit

Same thing happened on my '02. Went same route as you and it finally quit completely. One piece of advice. Pull the connector off the old sensor and the new sensor, you can pull the orange piece out of the center of the connector and pull the whole plug off make sure you note wire positions, Then tape a piece of wire to the old one, pull it down through the frame. Connect the new one to the wire and pull it back up. The way it is routed through the frame makes it impossible to pull the connector through. Pull the connector off the old one first to figure out how it comes apart. Hope this makes sense!!!
