I also Want to Add that this was My Fugg up, The Stabilizer from Throttle up is a good product at a good price. Just got a little over excited in stalling it, Broke the bolt off and Continued to and make a mess of Everything,I should have quit for the nite and tryed again in the morning, But I was having a terible week and wanted this to work out so Like a Jackass, I went after it with a vengance I should have Made that disclaimer in the first post. That was was some good advice!

Taps can be removed.
In the worst case sinerio,the tranny would have to be pulled and set up on a mill.
A machinist could remove the broken tap with a carbide end mill.If after removal,a thread insert may have to be installed if the thread is phucked up.

 

One thing that will help you get the drill started is to center punch the center of the bolt before you start drilling. This will help keep your drill from walking. Other than that , I agree with johnnyp. I am a machinist also.

 

The best way to remove a hopelessly broken bolt or tap is to use an ELOX machine.
An ELOX machine (Electrical discharge machine) removes the tap or broken fastener by burning it out.
Elox will not harm the or the threaded hole, so all that is needed after the procedure is to re-tap the threads as required, or install a Heli Coil or equivalent.
You can have a broken tap hopelessly stuck in a threaded aluminum machined or cast part, and use an Elox machine to completely remove the tap, without harming the original hole.

The workpiece held in a vice, and an electrode is positioned directly above the center of the tap. The machine tank that the workpiece is contained in is then filled with an oil (coolant) so the workpiece is totally submerged, then the electrode is energized, burning the tap away. The machine feeds the electrode at the proper rate to maintain the proper arc burning the tap until it is gone. The workpiece is removed, and cleaned. You can then install a Heli Coil or re-tap the hole as required.

I was an engineer in the aerospace industry (at one of the major manufacturers) for 38 years, and will attest that this is the best way to remove a broken tap. Sometimes it is faster to Elox a broken tap than to expend hours working on it with other methods. It is far more economic to Elox a small tap than to try to remove it by mechanical methods.
You should be able to find this capability in the yellow pages or on line.

I understand that money is tight, but this might be your only option to remove the broken tap and bolt.

No, they are not. There is a product out there that comes with several bits, each sized for your particular needs. You use the drill with one bit drilling backwards,. Then, you flip that same bit to the other end and walah.. the bolt is out. It sounds to me like you used fairly soft bolts. That will work in your favor here. Had you used grade 8 or better, then you might want help. Go to Home Depot and ask the friendly folsk in the orange vest for what I just explained to you. They will know. Mine have gotten me out of some very difficult stuations. Hope that helps.

My wife gave me the set after we saw it advertised on TV. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but feel that it would be very helpful in some situations.
The set contains sizes from #1 to #4, roughly corresponding to Easy Out sizes.
It is less expensive than Elox, and might do the job.
They also have several other broken screw extaction device you might find useable and interesting.

 

Some useful advice in this thread. At least no one said "turn the bike upside down and put it in a vice..."

 

Nightmare of all nightmares for a Tech ...Breaking a Tap in a closed end hole.... There is a tool for removing broken taps. Depending on if the tap is a 2, 3, or 4 fluted tap. They are not cheap. and break easly if not used propperly. My Advise is to take it to a machine shop and let them remove it. The way you are going the case is next to go.....FUBAR.
