Mine did the same thing, same RPM range, only difference is mine is an EVO and yours is a TC. The noise in mine turned out to be the front rod bearing which hammered the crankpin. Rebuilt the bottom and all quiet now. Hope that is not your issue, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

 

DRAAMMMNNN! That's just scary. Did the pecking noise you heard get worse with time, or did you just get tired of hearing it and tear into it? Man I hope that's not the case here.

 

My noise was pretty constant. The big problem started when all the metal particles trashed my oil pump.

My oil pressure sensor started going in and out about the same time so I never noticed the big drop in pressure as the idiot light never flashed at me and my gauge never dropped below 10 psi when in fact I had about 2 or 3 psi.

The big red flag was metal in my filter.

I ran it most of the summer that way. I think about 2800 total. Still never quit, never got worse until the oil pump prob. This is when I tore her down and
