Dropped the bike off today at dealer for service and the reply was did the light come on. Well no I still had 3 gallons. Seems to me the needle should read near half with a 6 gallon tank when 3 are left. Or is my math wrong? Having a hard time getting the tech to understand this. Just told him to check it anyhow.
No HogFather; your math is not wrong! Mine does the same thing and so does my buddies! The dealer tells us that is just the nature of the beast. So now I depend more on the “miles to empty” gauge and have found that to be fairly accurate.

When I'm on empty or very slightly above, the light comes on. When I fill up I take 5 gallons out of 6.

Works good for me....
You must have gotten the one in a millon. When mine is reading empty I usually have 2 gallons in the tank.

I guess mine is a rarity cause it seems to be very accurate. I never let it go below 1/4 and it takes 4 1/2 gallons to fill it up, now that air temp. guage that's a different story

I've had six other HD bikes in the past 20 years and my '09 Ultra is the first one to have a reasonably accurate fuel gauge.

I did a trip of over 4,000 miles with this bike and was surprised to find the fuel gauge was almost linear for the first 5 gallons from "Full" to "Empty." I could guess within a fraction of a gallon how much it would take at fuel stops.

As I remember, the owner's manual says that the "low fuel light" should come on with one gallon remaining. I'll have to try that sometime. Twice I've gone over 200 miles and had the gauge indicating almost empty ---- but the low fuel light did not come on --- and both times it only took about 4.6 gallons.

Now, if you want to talk about a screwed-up fuel gauge --- My '06 Ultra took forever to come off of "Full," and then when it indicated 1/2 full, it had about 1.75 gallons remaining of the 5 gallon tank.

the linear accuracy of the 09 guage is marginal but the key is repeatability. if you're familiar with your bike and know how much fuel is left at 1/2, 1/4, and empty you shouldn't have a problem. I rented a couple 09's and they seem pretty darn close to what my 09 Ultra guage show, when the guage shows empty and the light comes on it'll take about 1.5 gallons. I typically watch the "R" on the odo, much easier to guage.

Same here. When the light comes on I have approximately 1 gallon left and the mileage calculator is right on.

my honda has NO gas gauge or fuel light. I use the ODO method as the bike seems to get pretty consistent mileage. at 130-140 I need to fill up. At least there's a fuel **** so if I underestimate I can throw the reserve on. Would be nice to have one on all bikes instead of a light.
