Advanced Audio System Wiring Harness Part # 70172-06
I am going to bite the bullet and install the HD XM module in the faring on my 2007 Road Glide. Looking at the wiring harness that is required I came across the HD wiring harness (Advanced Audio System Wiring Harness Part # 70172-06) for $49.99. The HD web site gives the following description: Part # 70172-06
Allows installation of XM® Satellite components on Ultra models. Does not provide connections for additional components.
Fits '06-later FLHTCU, FLHTK and FLHTCUTG models equipped with Advanced Audio Radio.
MSRP US $49.95
My concern is that it states that it is for the Ultra models and does not list the FLTR model. All I want to do is hook the XM module to the radio. I would think that the radio on the Ultra is the same as the one on my Road Glide. I would think that the wiring harness would connect to the back of the HD head unit and the other end would connect into the XM module. Unless there is one or more connections that the wiring harness needs to be connected to and that is the difference between the Ultra and Road Glide.
I am trying to save a few bucks (Keep the wife happy) and I really do not need all the connections that wiring harness (Part #70169-06 #129.99) HD recommends for my bike.
If anyone has gone this route I would appreciate any and all input.
Thanks

I just did mine over the winter. I did buy the more expensive harness and ended up cutting and modding the thing to only use the stuff for the XM module. If I'm not mistaken, there is a thread on here about doing just this, and the poster did the same. I don't know if the ultra harness will work or not. I do know if I want to put a tour pack, speakers, and cb I can put the harness back together and its all there. Do a search and see what you come up with. Hope this helped a little.........

You'll have to bite the bullet again and buy the more expensive harness. I bought a used XM module that came with the Ultra harness off a forum member for my '08 Street Glide. The Ultra harness would not work. I had to buy the more expensive non-Ultra harness to get it to work. I'm sure where there is a will there is a way, but I couldn't find that cheaper way.

The non-Ultra overlay harness (~$110) is needed on the non-Ultra models to access the 35-wire connector on the back of the HK radio; it's through those pin-outs that the HK uses the XM, CB, etc. add-on modules. The Ultras already have the mating 35 wire connector as part of their wiring harnesses; non-Ultras don't.
Since Ultras don't come with XM, the inexpensive harness allows the XM module to be connected to the pre-existing 35 wire connector by adding the wires necessary to the OEM 35-wire connector on the Ultra harness w/o replacing the OEM harness.
When HD added the iPod and NIM modules, they offered an inexpensive (~$20) harness, p/n 69200033, to be used rather than the NUOH since the NUOH didn't have provision for those modules.
Rather than buy the expensive NUOH, just buy the 69200033 harness (and the Ultra harness) and supply the mating wires needed to access the XM pinouts of the HK radio. Besides being less expensive, it will make things much neater inside the fairing because the NUOH is a huge harness and can be difficult to route easily withing the fairing for reinstalling the outer fairing.
Good luck with your project.
