Default New touring bike owner...Things I should know?

For instance, my dyna required the use of lift adapters (or 2x4's) to jack the bike up. Primary bearing issues. Motor mount issues. Etc.

What are some of the "gee-whizz" things that I should know? It seems my 09 might possibly have a liquid cooled swing arm, and I need to drill the belt guard. What else? I'm assuming I can just slide my jack under the bike and lift it with no adapters...what are the best places to run a strap. Do the painted side covers just pull off, or are they bolted on? My bike is a 2009 road king classic. Thanks for helping a newb.

Never had to put anything under the bike for the jack on a 05 RKC,just slide the jack under.Side covers pull off and pop back on,never had an issue there either.Hook the straps wherever you can.

well there's your problem, you need a (fill in the blank here) jack....made just for touring bikes.

nah, nothing special about lifting that touring bike as long as your jack can cover the weight.

The side covers just pull off. They are not bolted on. I use wood blocks on my lift because the crank case is just about the same level as the frame. If you have ABS and want to get bars like the Wild One 508's that will allow you to sit up straight it's a big and expensive job. You'll need a custom brake line that goes from the bars to the module. It cost around $250 to $300. Also you'll need to remove the tank to do the job. The tranny is a little noisy in 5th and 1st. That's because they are straight cut gears on the 08 and 09's. The 10's use helical gears for 5th. But you can't retrofit the helical gears back to 09. The noise isn't that noticeable anyway. None of the detacheable backrest/luggage stuff for earlier model fit on the 09. That's because the whole setup is wider on the 09's and it requires a totally different docking system. Some pre 09 exhaust systems won't fit the 09. That's because you might need a notch on the inside of the right exhaust tube where the axle is. The best place for straps is between the tank and the top of the fork neck tube. There is about a 2-3 inch space there exposing the bike frame. This will put all presssure directly on the frame and none on the handle bars or triple tree when ratchetted down. Other than the above it's mostly just like all other FLHRC's. But the feel of the new frame is much improved over the 08 and earlier models.

By the way. What do you mean by a liquid cooled swing arm? And what are you going to drill? Just curious.

Your next bike will have a fairing, if you don't get the UltraClassic you will eventually.

..... you ride a bagger, the tip/top of the HD family, you don't have to wave @ the geeky guys/gals on those little scooters.
