Default cruise control 07 SG

How many of you have installed cruise on your SG and is it very hard to do, doesn't look hard, but I heard the dealer has to do something to the bike

thanks rob

Rob, lots of HDF'ers, myself included, have installed the HD cruise control kit on our bikes. No dealer service is needed; that's for '08 and newer bikes with the electronic throttle.

Stop by the parts counter and ask the guy to print-out the installation instructions for the cruise kit for your bike. You can read it and see what's involved and if you want to do it. Not difficult at all. Having the HD service manual also makes for an easy DIY project.

Go for it.

thanks for your info, I wll do , I also have the manual for the 07 SG, but I thought I read somewhere that the dealer has to turn it on, I found another thread on here which I think it tells how to do it our selves.

Thanks Rob

On the 07 and earlier you have to take it to the dealer and they charge you a fee to activate the cruise control.

No dealer service required for '07's. The '08 and later TBW bikes require it, however.

Many found this upgrade easy, but I didn't. The problem I had that slowed me down the most was finding the info needed to connect the switch to the existing harness. Much needed info is missing from the instruction sheet, and instead they refer you to the service manual. I had a hard time finding the pin assignments for the switch, as the pins from the switch need to be inserted in slots 4,5, and 12. After far too much aimless searching I finally found a graphic showing the pin assignments on p. 8-69. Had the instruction sheet pointed to this page to begin with it would've shaved 30 min. off my install time.

Study the procedure for removing and inserting these small pins, which is in Appendix B of the service manual. The initialization procedure is forthright but be sure to warm the bike up before doing it.

Other than this and the fairly time-consuming task of mounting the servo and running the cable, it isn't a bad install given some patience. You don't need to refer to dealer service for any reason unless you botch the installation, which isn't likely. Later TBW bikes are much easier to install since the servo is part of the throttle system and is already installed, but you'll need to take the bike to the dealer to activate it, and at my dealer that would be another $37.50 (minimum).

BTW, if you don't have a service manual you can buy one on Ebay for $9 in a PDF version. I have both and mostly use the PDF file, also has the Electircal Diagnostics manual included. Having a search function makes this the preferable type, not to mention the much-lower cost. Together they would probably cost $150 in hard-bound form from the dealer. I don't know if these are legal copies, as HD has a copyright on the hard copies and I see no copyright notice at all on the PDF file.

I installed the cruise on my '07 SG, and I didn't find it too challenging. Take your time and you'll be fine. As others have already noted you don't need the dealer to activate anything.

Rob, when you are at the dealer, pull the instruction sheet from the kit and purchase a couple extra of the tiny "C" clip that comes with the kit. The instruction sheet will have the part no. It's very small and easily lost during the installation. Do the same for the brass ferrules used on the throttle and idle cables. These are very cheap parts and their cost to have extras is cheap job interruption insurance which can be returned later for a refund if you like.
