How do you remove the heel shifter?

Simply loosen allen head bolt and slip it off....Keep it because it is an exact replacement for toe shifter.
From there, either leave toe shifter where it is, or install decorative cap in it's place....If you decide to relocate toe shifter to outer end of shaft, then you must buy chrome spacer.....Those who intall floor board extensions soon relocate toe shifter to outer end of shaft....Dealer sells both decorative cap and chrome spacer.
While you are there with allen wrench, check toe shifter is really tight because they tend to be loose from factory....many have fallen off new bikes.
....Also advise you put a few bucks aside to buy real heim joints for long shifter shaft...factory joints tend to break soon and often.

That's true, there is a groove around shaft that keeps shifter in place as long as bolt remains stabbed in hole. Thanks for adding that.

You may want to consider leaving the heel shifter on. When I first got my RG, I was all ready to take it off. After riding with it for a while and getting used to it, I discovered that I like it. Now I wouldn't even consider taking it off. It's a more definative shift, and it doesn't scuff the front of your boot. Good luck either way!

Before my Road King I had never owned a scoot with a heel shifter. At first I liked the way it kept my foot positioned correctly for toe shifts, but attempting heel upshifts shifts was not for me once I tried it....Especially after I installed hwy pegs and discovered it really got in the way whenever I needed to quickly relocate my left foot back on the floorboard.
What I did after I removed mine was to relocate the floorboards height setting, then shift the lever a spline to located it closer to my toe so up shifts were effortless requiring just a slight twitch upwards.
Another thing a guy can do is leave it installed, but swap it to the inside on the shaft to get it out of the way.
