Not sure why you're wanting to remove the heel shifter, but if it's because it restricts foot/boot space..............several years ago I ordered an extended heel shifter arm, think it's 3" longer than stock H-D arm, and it makes a huge difference. Not only do you have the extra 3" of space, with it extending beyond the back of the footboard, you can rotate it down a couple of notches on the spline so you barely have to lift your heel to use it. I just move it to the next bike if I sell or trade. Works great IMO; think it was around $75 at the time.

I removed my heel shifter because it always seemed in the way. I've always been a toe type guy. I did leave it on for the first six months and tried to adapt to heel shifting. Didn't work for me and as stated above, it seemed to be in the way of resting my foot on the board. I bought Soos kit (highly recommended)to move my boards out and then removed the heel shifter. I slid the toe shifter out to the end of the shaft. I took the rubber part off the heel shifter and cut it down and used it for a spacer on the shaft. It looks good to me but I might breakdown and buy a chrome spacer later. I did throw the heel shifter in my bag because I have heard alot on this forum about them falling off. Nothing wrong with having a spare.

I think a harley is the only bike that offers a heel shifter. (if i'm wrong, not the first time) so to be a real harley rider you are supposed to use it! I am a size 9 1/2 so I don't have a problem with space. If I did I would buy an extension. I love using the heel shifter. I think it makes for much smoother shifting. JMO though.

Gives more room for your boot! Glad I took mine off.

Just like everyone is saying, allen wrench all you need..
Here's the PROFESSIONAL way to doit.

Park the bike (safely).
grad a beer
Locate the allen wrenches
Grad another beer.
Call your buddies ask them to come over for a beer while your working on the bike
But wait for them before you start.
when they arrive grab another beer and ask them how to do it.
Grad another beer and wait for them to offer to show you how to do it
There you go

Some folks like 'em on and some don't but they only fall off when they're neglected.
One thing I found is that you'll have more foot room if you shorten the shaft after removing the heel shifter, plus it just looks better than an afterthought cap or spacer. It's easy enough to do and no it won't rust...at least mine hasn't in 3+ years. If you decide to go back to the heel shifter a regular length replacement shaft costs $12 - about half the cost of a spacer or cap.

I'm not a big fan of heal shifters. I don't have anything against them per say, I just don't use them and removing the heal shifter from my Ultra was the first thing I did to the bike when I got it home. Normally, the toe shifter is on the inner point of the shift axle and I really wanted it all the way out which looks a lot better with a spacer in place so I got one of these.

Scroll down until you find part number 44401 for the FLT models. They make others for the other HD family lines. It's chromed, fits like a charm, and looks totally factory.

FWIW!

i absolutely hate the heel shifter. they are not the same part, the front and rear. when you remove the rear, set it next to the front one and you'll see that the allen bolt goes in upside down on one of them. best to use a cover rather than a spacer, because you will gain floorboard space by using the little chrome cap to cover the splines. if you wear big boots, you'll be glad you removed the grandpa lever.

Well, I don't know about your bike but the heal shifter on my 09 Ultra "is" exactly the same as the toe shifter. As they were installed from the factory, the retension bolt on the heal side came up from the bottom while the toe side is inserted from the top. Take the heal shifter and flip it over to use on the toe side and they're identical. I would have thought that would be the case on all Harley models but maybe not!

I'm not a fan of heal shifters either!
