I have scheduled to install a new rear. Going with the E3 Elite. D402 rear has 10k and has significant wear. front tire still looks brand new.
Millers in Daytona Beach charged me $135.00 for the tire and $60.00 to mount and balance. Going in Saturday in preparation for a 2000 mile road trip.
From what I have heard and seen, this should be a good tire. Only time will tell.

Unlike some, I don't think the D402 is a bad tire, but I also don't think it is the best tire either. How some of you are getting >10k from a rear D402 is beyond me, as even riding conservatively, always solo, and keeping pressures up, I couldn't do better than 10k each out of two D402's. The front was replaced at 25k with some usable tread remaining, but it was starting to exhibit quirky handling, so I replaced it with an E3 about five months ago. Much better, and much-reduced groove tracking!

Now, for the rear. In May 2008 (16k miles ago) I replaced the second D402 rear tire with an E3, and I still am in awe of how well this tire is performing and wearing. On a recent trip to the Smokies we ran into the worse riding conditions of my riding career, and these tires were real confidence builders riding in the mountains in wet or dry conditions--and we weren't dillydallying around the twisties either. This rear now has 16k and has 4/32" in the center (new is 9.5/32"), and I think it will make at least 20k. This is a dramatic improvement! If these tires didn't perform as well I might understand the increased durability, but I think they are in fact much better.

Now, the downside: They only come in BW.

D402 will last 10000 miles if you keep them aired up to 41 in the rear. Replaced mine last week with an Elite 3, best modification ever made. No more wiggle, doesn't follow grooves and after getting caught in the rain the other day it was so stable compared to the 402's. Dennis Kirk, $122.00 delivered to the door.

I've got 6K on my D402's and they are almost gone. Considering the E3's, but how does a 90 fit when the stock calls for an 85. There isn't much room there. Are you guys experiencing any rubbing?

Thanx guys for all your input! I'm replacing the rear only with another d402 reluctantly, don't want mismatched tires and don't want to waste what's left of the front. I ride 70% of the time 1 up and I don't haul alot in the bags. We've made 1 trip to the Shenandoah Mountains, Awsome Ride!!!, rode 1 up,bags loaded, my wife had her 09 1200 Custom loaded also but that is the only time I've had the bike loaded. Most travel is around Pittsburgh suburbs. I ride fairly hard but don't do any burn outs. This will probably be my last Dunlop. Found GR8 deal on tires thru cyclegear.com. They also have a local store just north of Pgh. paid 116. total-free shipping and $20 to install tire, only downfall is that they are 40 miles away and you have to remove the wheel yourself. still a good deal! If you can't wait for one to be delivered check out M&M leather in Greensburg, awsome group of people and good deals on just about anything you can get from a catalog! Tires were about $30 higher and they don't install or I would of used them without a doubt! Again thanx for all the gr8 input, Shows that their are still good people out there!

took my original 402 rear off my 08 FLHT at just over 20,000 still had 3/32. Now at 37,000 and my first replacement still has over 5/32. The front (original) still has close to half the thread left. I have never got more then 12-13 K out of a rear before. I'll never use anything but 402s

I only get 6000 miles out of my rear 402s. ..... I'm gonna try the Elite 3s next change!
