The air temp gauge on my E.G. classic really sucks. All the other owners I have talked to say the same thing.
Is there a sending unit to the gauge? If so can a person move the sending unit to get a more accurate reading?
When actual temp outside is 70 the gauge will read, 85/90 degrees.

 

The dealer told me that the air temp guage doesn't indicate the ambient air temperature. Instead, it indicates the "intake" air temp - which is going to be hotter than ambient because of the engine heat.

 

My dealer told me it was for ambient air temp.
The intake air temp makes more sense since it shows warmer.

 

Hello all , yes I too have this same problem , but its really not a problem , I work for a Benz dealer and the germans have always had ambient temp gauge in all the cars the produce , the gauge is only accurat over a certain speed to give the car/driver , harley/rider a true temp of incoming air temp, its actually there on german and all car makers have them so if the outside temp is below freezing you know to be aware of black ice on the asphalt.way too many accidents on hiways from unknown ice on the road. But living in Az the thing reads so hot!!!!

the air temp guage unit is actually inside your fairing - if you pull of the outer fairing you will be able to find it by tracing the wire from the guage - so, you are reading the air temp insider your fairing - not real world - replace it with an oil tem guage

 

The sensor is inside the fairing making it more of a "radio temperture gauge".
Why would we need a air temperture gauge when we are allready outside?
It should have been a oil pressure gauge installed at the factory.
One more example of Harley's wisdom.

 

The air temp gauge is a worthless piece of sh*t. Replace it with an oil temp gauge.

A friend recently had a similar problem with the dealership that sold him his streetglide. He wanted an aftermarket seat, to which the salesman told him there weren't any on the market for the street glide yet...Well I sent him the page straight from Mustang to prove he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

As has been mentioned, the temp sensor is mounted inside your fairing...They actually ARE acurate when the sun goes down. Its the sunlight heating up the fairing that creates the elevated temps. It might get slightly better if you can relocate it to just outside the fairing...maybe behind and under the forks.

I took the advice listed here and just installed the Roger McEwan oil temp guage kit that WallysCycleWorld sells for about $80.00....much more usefull information.

 

Air temp gauge is worthless...can't say anything else.

 

Get rid of it and put in an oil temp guage. Buy a thermometor that attaches to the handlebar. It is moe accurate
