Default RE: Air temp gauge?

Like the guy said, move the sensor outside of the fairing and it will be much more accurate. It's just about the cheapest gauge HD could stick in the hole to balance the gauges. What were they thinking? The headlight produces a lot of heat, and add the radio........of course it reads too high.
Forget the compass, too. Friend of mine says it is a peice of junk.

Some of these dealers never stop amazing me at what they know.
ORIGINAL: PoleCat

The dealer told me that the air temp guage doesn't indicate the ambient air temperature. Instead, it indicates the "intake" air temp - which is going to be hotter than ambient because of the engine heat.

Here is a link if you would like to attempt to fix it - https://www.hdforums.com/m_72932/tm.htm - So far I have left mine alone but next winter it may see an oil temp gauge

Oil temp seems more useful.

The sensor for the air temp guage was right above my headlight on my Ultra. I relocated it lower in the fairing and it seems to read more accurately. Regardless, on my next service I'm going to replace it with a oil temp guage.

I agree with the others that say the gauge is useless, I see that it's hot or cold, dress appropiately. If all your nerve endings don't work, I guess that it would help to tell you that it's cold or hot out or then you could watch the weather channel. I put an oil temperature gauge in as I prefer to know how hot the oil is getting in my motor.....bob.

Don't want to appear to be a smart azz, but the 01 Owner's Manual says;
"The air temperature gauge indicates the ambient air temperature in (degrees) F. This gauge is found on the front panel of the fairing."

I find 'everyone' hasanswers to questions. Sometimes, the question maynot be one worth asking.

Even if your get one answer, another question usually arises....ambient to what?

It fills a need: fill the hole, don't worry about real accuracy, and let's sell another. Anyone trust their gas guage? I think this might be worthy of the Accuracy Clause.

Default RE: Air temp gauge?

This is a copy of the e-mail I got from someone on this forum about a fix to this.....

Good Afternoon, I actually did put a short note on the forum a while back
but I don't know how to put in back on..Sorry

You will find the sensor under the fairing on the upper left side (setting
on the bike). It is white and small. If you are not sure which one it is
just check the wire color at the back of the gauge. Cut the wires (2) and
splice in a foot or so of the same size wire. You can then mount the sensor
with double side tape outside the fairing. I mounted mine on the triple tree
(don't put it on the bottom or it will hit the fender). One guy drilled a
small hole through the inner fairing and mounted it by the cig lighter. You
can also paint it black or whatever, and it will not affect the reading.

Good luck

Gary
