Default Does a Trailer Require a Tag In Your State?

Here in Tennessee, I just found out I can hall a trailer behind my truck to my hearts' content, with no tag on the trailer, until I cross a state line....then, according to DMV cashier, I'm illegal.
What State are you from, and what's the policy on trailer tags?

In Wisconsin....no tag until you hit a certain gross trailer weight.
My 6x9 utility trailer and pull behind motorcycle trailer require no plates.
My neighbors deluxe Wells Cargo toy hauler has a plate.
I've never been stop in any of the 30 states I trailered though.
You are good to go!!!!!!!

Illinois(S is SILENT)..Must have plates and current tags, but if your state doesnt require them then another state cant enforce there rules on you.Or can they??????
I just bought a van in Tennessee and had to get a driveaway(Temp. Tag) to take it out of the state!!!! In Illinois you have 24 hours to remove from state.

Interesting question. Here in Wa you need tags and lights. But if you are pulling a log splitter with no tags or lights, no one will say anything. So I guess the smart move is to always carry an ax in your MC trailer so you can say it's a log splitter.

I'm in TN, too.
You leave this question rather broad.
Depends what you're doing with the trailer.
If you're using it in the line of business, i.e. lawn trailers...you are required to have a plate.
Personal use, no plate needed.
Same holds true with enclosed trailers.
