Default AMSOIL 10W40 and 75 90 Gear oil

I have 4 quarts of the 10W40 and almost a full quart of the 75 90 Gear oil that is about 2 years old, left over from my last bike.

Ready for my 5000 miles service and would like to do it myself and use this oil up if possible. I had the 1000 miles service done from the dealer with the HD synthtic. Everything I have read on the site says to use the 20W50 and the 75 90 Gear. Would it hurt anything to use the 10W40 this time and use the 20W50 at the 10000 miles service?

Also I have not got a service manual yet and would like instructions on the oil change and anything else I need to do for the 5000 miles service. I know that is a lot to ask and I should just get a manual with the money I will save doing the service myself but money is realy tight right now.

Thanks for any advise and this is for a 2008 Road Glide and I live in souhern North Carolina.

Your owner's manual tells you everything you need to know to change the fluids. There is a chart of what to do at each scheduled maintenance in the back of the book. You should probably have a service manual to do some of the checks in the 5K service.

Never used 10W40, but I did put SAE 60 Weight in my engine and it runs fine.

I would not use it in the summer. You could use it in the colder months. But I would stick with 20W50.

I would use the 10-40 in my primary only. For about $25.00 you can get a 5 qt jug of Mobile1 15-50 synthetic. Many guys here use it with no issues at all. Myself included.

I agree with Soos that you could put it in your primary, but I wouldn't use it in the engine except in very cold weather. The official Moco spec is that 10w40 can be used in temperatures below 40°F. Amsoil or any other expensive synthetic is overkill for the primary, and I would use it in my car instead.

Also, another idea would be to mix one quart of the 10w40 per change in the winter months if your location isn't S. FL or some other sub-tropical area where temperatures remain moderate.

Put the 10-40 in your car and go and get some 20-50 for your bike, the 75-90 will work OK in the transmission.
