Default Flat black powder coat??

I know that some of you have powder coated parts with flat/satin black instead of gloss black. I was wondering how it's holding up for you. My powder coater recommended gloss because the flat fade in time, and a buddy of mine that did his in flat cleaned his with simple green and it left patchy, faded spots. I was wondering if yours has held up or if they are just using the wrong powder. I really wanted to go with the flat/satin, but I'm thinking of settling for gloss because of this. Are they using the wrong powder? If you know of the correct powder to use for flat, do you have a code or part number you could give me?

Thanks,
fatguy

I PC'ed pretty much everything on my 2009 SG flat black and I added a flat clear on top of the flat black coat. It's early to tell because it's the first season but I cleaned some spots with Simple Green and it didn't dull the color.

Should hold up just fine if done right. we have coated TONS of bike parts in flat, satin, and low gloss blacks. we have a list of things you shouldn't clean powder with to be safe that we give customers if they need it. using un-diluted degreaser is on that list for sure. strong enough solvents, if left on powder and/or rubbed in hard can sometimes change the color or gloss level.

I've got lots of stuff powder coated on my scoot. Some of the parts have been coated since 2003 and they are holding up great. The front end parts were coated in 2005 in a semi gloss and they're holdng up great as well. Not a single chip or mark.

The key is to find a coater that puts alot of emphasis on surface prep. The coater I use insists on sandblasting parts as part of the prep. Its obviously paid off. Make sure you're clear with the coater on what you want masked off and that he plugs all the necessary holes. Preferably with silicon plugs.

Sorry I can't help with the type of powder or paint code #. Don't typically deal with that info.

Good luck.
