Default Check engine light comes on

I need some help here. The check engine light comes on about 3 seconds after starting the bike and stays on for 10 seconds. What does this mean? Is there a way to find out what error it is trying to tell me?

thanks

you have a code stored.. may not be anything.. its a stored code if it was really serious the light would be on all the time .. i think its like 50 on offs on the ignition and it will go away.,. do a search on codes here and you might find out how to clear it

It means there is stored code in the ECM. If the light remained lit it would indicate a currebt or active code.

by the time I finish this someone else will probably reply...

short version...

press and hold odometer rest button
turn ignition sw. to ignition (make sure kill switch is in run position)

"diag" appears in odometer window

press and release reset switch
PSStb appears
P should be flashing

press reset switch for more than 5 seconds

code is displayed (or none if no codes present)

press and release switch again to see if more codes are present.

if no more codes present "end" will appear

to clear DST's press an hold reset for more than 5 seconds

to exit without clearing, press and release the reset switch, turn off ignition

once you have the code, post it back up here, anyone with an electrical manual can look it up.

Thanks again HarleyWood. I got error code U 1097, which is something about the ecm and the speedometer losing data. Nothing serious I guess.

Clear it and if it don't come back, you're good to go.
