I suspect that the mid-life-crisis and weekend rider purchasers are fewer. People are actually saving more and buying less. For most Americans, the motorcycle is still a hobby purchase, not a primary means of transportation.
The long time riders will continue to ride and trade every few years and may be apt to ride more (stress relief, some $$$ savings on gas).
In the cities, Vespas are all the rage. I read somewhere that since 2001, scooter sales increase by 20% each year, every year.

The OL is a county commissioner and her last report from DMV showed a substantial increase in bike sales over last year. Not so with cars. The GM at the Harley dealer told me they had already sold 50 bikes this month.
