Default 2009 tire size bummer

A friend with a 2009 FLHT was headed out for a ride and found his rear tire flat. Somehow a 3" nail was embeded head first in the sidewall. When he went looking for a replacement tire he found out that the tire sizes on the 2009 touring series are Harley ONLY sizes. You can only get them from the dealer.
HD did this to get a better aspect ratio and a little more contact patch but to me it means a serious pain in the *** if you blow one hundreds of miles from a dealer.
If I was going to buy a new bike, it would be a 2008. You can get those tires overnight from a dozen warehouses

You can put a variety of sizes on these rims, you are only stuck with HD if you want to be. I went with Metzler on my HD and the size is so close that you can't tell the difference unless you measure.

I thought most guys were sticking a 200 on the rear when the time to replace came up.

I'm looking at a J&P catalog right now that has the 09 Dunlop tires in it. I'm sure other mail order houses have them too.

Not so. The Dunlop rep told my Cycle Gear guy directly that it is a dealer-only item and will not be available to other retailers. The concern mentioned above about a flat far from Mother Harley is real. This applies to the D407/D408's only.

Hind sight is 20/20 that is a good reason to go with the road hazard on the tires. Replacement would have been free. Some how mine seems to find nails at about 4/32nds and gets replaced. It costs about 350.00 two tires and it has payed for its self.

Um, plenty of tires available for the 09s. I got AVONS in 2 days from Dennis Kirk, could have had Metz or Dunlops as well. Dunno who is tellin ya they have to come from a HD dealer, not true. Oh an by the way, the 18s that come on the SERG, have not found any in stock at a dealer yet. Stock Dunlops those are.........go figure.
