2008 FL IDS problem notification
Short version:
Solution to problem: R&R 5 bolts with USA made grade 8 bolts & use Loctite® Threadlocker 272™ withstands temperatures to 450°F. This high temperature/ high strength, red threadlocker is formulated for heavy-duty applications. Prevents bolts up to 1 ˝” (36 mm) from loosening.
Long version. I was out on my bike and ran into a guy on a 2008 FL SG on the side of the road. I stop for anyone except for those who wave you on. He had problems. Sprocket was spinning but bike did not move. IDS hub mount was spinning on the bearing. Cush drive was toast. I was visiting with a friend of mine who lived about 5 miles away. He brought his trailer & we picked up his bike as the owner had someplace to go in a hurry. He was frustrated.
Louis, my friend pulled wheel and observed all of the 5 bolts sheared. There is over 3” of threaded hole in the wheel for IDS attachment and “Bottom-out” bolts was not the problem. LINK to the day
The wheel was trashed but the bike was under warrantee. When asking around the different HD dealerships on this problem there was a total of three bikes with this identical problem. One at Treasure Coast and two at Palm Beach HD. I believe to R&R the bolts and be done with it
- Spinning sprocket when motor was running but bike not moving.
- Pulled wheel, 5 broken bolts, wheel, IDS, et al. trashed.
- I believe poor quality OEM bolts were used from Factory.

Answer info
Of course I got rewarded for stopping.
- I met a fellow biker who was really having a crappy day as he was on a roadway in rural Indian Town, FL. No housing within a few miles or so (near Sikorsky).
- I had the resources to bring (trailer) his bike from the rural roadway and store it in a safe place (Luis's house).
- We also later met his wife when she took him home, cool girl who owns a used motorcycle and car dealership in Stewart, FL called Mad Motorcycles. This is somewhere around 30 or so miles away.
- We were able to look at a serious HD problem, make a determination to the cause of it, and gain the experience.
- We got to see the results of this failure for ourselves.
- We were building a 106 CI. on a 2008 "Copper Top" Street Glide the same day for a HDForum member (from Canada) who was vacationing down here and got a bigger motor and a FL suntan. Louis R&R'd his IDS/Wheel bolts. I am sure he will never know he could have had a problem.
- I have the opportunity to inform all of our great members here who own that type of bike and year of this problem.
- Knowing the owner of the bike must have been relieved he must have been once he took a shower and set down. His bike was safe and we helped his problem go away. HD of Palm Beach came out and picked up his bike. It was a bummer for him because Indian Town road is one that could be used to get to Lake Okeechobee and he was geared up for a day of riding on a Sunday (I think).
- Paying it froward and backward for all of those who had and will help me when I have and will be in the same predicament.
- It was the only option open, if you see someone on the side of the road, you stop and if needed, help what ever way you can.

I was on my wat to Birmingham this morning (still there at this time) and seen a roadking on the side of the road. Stopped to see if I could help. His front wheel bearings seems to be toast. he called riders hd from his cell. I stopped by there on my way by. They were taking good care of them.
I couldn't do much more as I was on my bike and 75 miles form my house.
Several other bikes came by while we were discusing things and they didn't even look at us.
Always at least stop and check if you might can help.
It could end of being you some day.

Regarding the IDS.... a couple weeks ago I was on the return leg of a 4,000 mile trip on my '08 FLHTCUI. I pulled in to a gas station to gas up and as I pulled away from the pumps I felt something terribly wrong, a clunking and grinding sound. I could feel in my seat that it was coming from the rear wheel. Turns out the IDS bearing completely "disintegrated" on me, with no warning. Prior to this I was travelling between 75-80 mph constantly from Missoula to Spokane and I felt nothing out of the ordinary nor heard anything unusual. I was towed to the nearest dealer, (for free), and they fixed me up right away, (for free), but the mechanics were scratching their heads, said they'd never heard of this happening. I just want to give a heads up to all '08 and newer owners cuz I'm sure things wouldnt have ended nicely if this had come apart at freeway speeds. I dont know what can be done as there is no maintenance on this bearing but I do think I'll replace the bolts with a higher grade bolt. The bike only had @ 7500 miles on it when this happened.
