Thumbs down Cam chain tensioner

My friend at work has a 04 EGC and has recently had to replace his oil pump, and cam chain tensioners. The tensioners were not aligned with the chain and wore down to nothing causing metal in the oil and loss of power. Cost him a pretty penny and he now is constantly saying it is not if but when it will happen to the rest of us. Has anybody heard of this pandemic. He had 27k miles at the time. Claims we should all go out and spend money now to solve this. Mine is an 02 EGC with 1/2 the miles and I JUST WANT TO RIDE. What do you think?

With the mileage you have, looks like you could go 7 more years without a worry.

The tensioners will wear out but shouldn't occur that quickly unless there is a problem. I had my changed on my Deluxe after 50K miles and it was about 70% worn at that point.

Make sure to check the inner and outer ones. In my case the inner one that is hard to see was down to 20%.

It is a well known fact that the tensioners will wear out on 2000-2006 bikes except the 06 Dyna which is the first bike that got the new cam plate setup. It is a varied amount of mileage depending on the bike with this issue. Only way to know where they are at is to check.

Don't understand what your friend is talking about - as far as I know there is no adjustment for the cam tensioners. Sounds like he may have had issues with whoever installed them or some sort of chain problem.

Whatever, I decided at 22K to go to gear drive - had only a little wear and would have easilly made it to 30K. But, love the gear drive - no whine, nothing and never have to worry about going in there again - at 38K now. In fact, gear drive working so well that I'm almost tempted to pop the cam cover to make sure everything looks okay (oh, knock on wood to be safe).

I would check them at 20-30,000 miles. I replaced mine on the 02 at 40,000 and side of inner one was broken laying in cam chest.
