Default Melted plastic on pipes

A black plastic bag hit one of my hot mufflers and has left a black residue on the chrome. I've tried using the following to clean it but to no avail: various chrome cleaners, Goof-Off, turpentine, paint thinner, acetone. All have been applied with a clean sponge. I even tried a heat gun to try and soften the plastic but that was a no-go. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Try a little brake clean...Spray on a rag and apply to the area a few times, or carefully spray the area being sure not to get spray on the paint. Should come off after a couple of treating it a couple of times.

Easy off and fine steel wool works well. Let it soak for a while first.

You might try WD40 too.

Also, believe it or not, you can scrape it with a penny. The copper is softer than the chrome and won't scratch it. Be carefull and go easy.

Purple Slice will take it off. Saw a demo at a bike show. Heat the pipe up, spray, wipe with cotton cloth. Will not harm paint.

I just had an entire bag melt to the inside of one of my Rineharts. I can tell you that the steps I mention below should be followed or you risk paint damage if you use oven or brake cleaner.

Steps:
1. Take off side bag
2. Take off slip-on muffler
3. Apply easy-off oven cleaner (yellow can) in a WELL ventilated area that is no where near anything painted!
4. Wait over night and apply easy-off again without wiping
5. Wipe off melted plastic with relative ease using a cotton cloth then throw the cloth away
6. If step 5 seems too hard apply another coat of the not so easy-off and repeat Step 5
7. See step 6.

I had to apply two nights in a row and the plastic came off with ease.

*** And I can't stress to you enough ***

WARNING: DO NOT SPRAY THE CLEANER ANYWHERE NEAR ANYTHING PAINTED!!!

Same here. Make sure it is COLD Easy Off oven cleaner, and obviously make certain the pipes are cold. Spray it on, let sit overnight and hose it off. Should come off pretty easily.

+1 on the Easy Off.

Slip newspaper or something behind it to protect everything else. Spray it on before you hit the rack, in the morning wipe if off with a damp rag.

I've used the following a couple times. Once it was the wifes heels and the other time it was my chepy rainsuit I kept in the bags for emergencies.
left the pipe cool completely. Overnight is fine. Gently wipe it off with some 0000 steel wool. Worked both times with no ill effects.
