Default making detachable fairing for 2001 roadking

I'm trying to get an older HD fairing and modify it to use my existing detachable windshield mounts.I have a 2001 FLHRI with a detachable windshield.
Any input on this would be helpfull!
I don't want to spend $1700.00 on something I'm going to use a few times a year-

I put an old ultra fairing on my RK for the winter. I went to the local hardware store and bought some sheet steel and cut some brackets to mount on the windshield mounts you are talking about. I painted the fairing and striped it so it looked pretty good. The color was about 1 shade off but, apparently, I was the only one that noticed it. My next project concerning the fairing is to mount a stereo and speakers and clean up the back of it and repaint it. After that I might leave it on there. Who knows. I read somewhere that you can order the mounts from HD for the EG/UC/EGC but I haven't checked on it.

Vern, You have done an awesome job on that fairing. It looks good in the pic. If not for the RK emblem on the fender. I wouldn't have noticed from the outside it wasn't.

Thanks man. Like I said, the color was a little off and it bugged me. (It's Dupli color spray paint but don't tell anybody ) With the Tour Pac on it has fooled several people.

Vern you really did a great job. I have been wanting to do the same and have been looking at all of the add on fairings out there(Dragonfly, hoppe, etc...) But what i really want to do is on the inside. Get the fairing mounted mirrors, tach, temp, radio etc.. What did you do with the inner fairing? Could you post a couple of pictures?

thanks,
David

David, I cut the ridges off the inner fairing where the speedo and tach went, then I cut an aluminum cover plate for the whole thing. I attached my windshield bag to the plate. My plan is to paint the inner fairing after I mount a stereo and any gauges I install. After that the fairing will be , more or less, permanent (I think).
Here's the back.

Great idea on the windshield bag. I have been trying to think of ideas of filling the speedo and Tach holes from the inside. I only take off my windshield on my RK when i am washing it so i am not so concerned about the ease of switching it out. Thanks for the ideas. I think i am going to give it a shot. I will probably try and get a set of EG brackets though. I learned the hard way that i am not that handy with the old ArcWelder. Learned a couple of good lessons that day. Learned why welders don't wear shorts, learned it isn't as easy as it looks, learned why welders don't wear running shoes, and i did i mention i learned it wasn't as easy as it looks. thanks again, David
