Question Exposed Stage 1 Filter Element?

Hi Folks:

I'm looking for some guidance and/or opinions on running with an exposed Stage 1 Air Filter Element. I don't have an engine background, so this is all new to me.

I'm going to be ordering a Stage 1 Air Cleaner, Exhaust System and PCIII from Fuel Moto this week. I want to run the Air Filter Element exposed rather than use the stock Air Cleaner Cover. I just like the way it looks. My concern is in getting the element wet. I've read through several threads where the general consensus seems to be that it's OK. My reading though makes me believe that it's only if you get caught in the rain. I ride year round in evrything except heavy falling snow. When in the rain, my bike will sit "outside" in the rain as well while I'm at work. I'm afraid that the element will act as a sponge and basically drown my engine. Are the "socks" I've read about effective? If so, any idea(s) where they can be purchased? I can't find an HD P/N for them and other sites seem to only have the "socks" for the cone shaped filters.

Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Charlie.

I run mine exposed. My K&N filter is "oiled" and sheds rain. I have never tried to ride through a torrential downpour (I pull over under shelter if possible). Can't say about the socks, but I do see a lot of bikes with them. You might consider a baggie cover for when you are at work.

I was running an open element on the Street Bob.

Picked up a DryCharger and kept it in the fork bag for those rainy days.

Only used it once before I traded in the Bob but it did seem to do the job.

I used to use the covers when I was racing jet ski's. They worked well on them.
