Avoid the temptation to stop at that quaint little Mexican food joint on the roadside out in the middle of nowhere to sample the local fare. Sharts after chowing down on Juan's Habanero salsa make for a long day on the road.

Ten minutes out of the saddle will buy you 110 miles in the saddle. No kidding! Just did a 700 mile day--stopped every 110 miles for a 10 minute stretch. Got up the next day and did it again...

Lot's of good tips already listed ,one I would add, if you're riding with others, have a clear discussion of everyones ride expectations. I recently took a week long ride with a friend; my idea was hit the road no later than 0800, his idea, since he was on vacation, included sleeping late in the morning. Some guys like to ride hard and get miles in and others like to take their time. It's way better to know and discuss this before your trip rather than during the trip.

Very sage advice there. I took a road trip with couple of friends about four years ago and one of them hasn't spoken to me since.

Have the bike serviced including a safety check. If you have borderline tires or brakes get new ones.
A backrest will do wonders.
A GPS will help.
Investigate the laws in states you're not accustomed to riding in.

The soul can only enjoy what the butt can endure!
Know when to go,
know when to stop,
know when to simply look around & enjoy!

I just read through all of these and no one has said it yet..........
Stay off the interstate if possible. The slow road is usually the prettiest. Dont stay in big cities if possible. The smaller the town the more fun I usually have, ( and the motels are usually 1/2 price )
If you are taking a 2 week trip call home at day 12 and say " sorry but we are going to be 2 days late " you will be grinning from ear to ear on day 15 & 16
