Default Paint Help

I bought a fairing for my RKC and need it painted to match my
Crimson Red Sunglow bike. My painter is asking me if the base coat needs a reducer. The stealership I deal with has no input.
Is there anyone out there that can give me a complete rundown on the proper way to do this. thabk you in advance for any help.

I can't help yeah with your question, but I can tell ya that it'll look good on your bike. I have a Dragonfly fairing on my RKC in Crimson Red Sunglo. Dragonfly painted it for me, though.

the base coat is the color. And, it is sometimes ready to paint right outta the can. And, sometimes you have to thin it a little bit.

you just have to look at the viscosity.

It won't change the color by adding a reducer to it.

If the paint is coming from the HD dealer, then they have the HD Paint book to identify the part no. for the paint. It will also tell them, and you, that HD paint requires "activator" PN 99825-02; comes in an 8 oz. can; and, is mixed with the base coat. That's what the "**" means at the top of the "Quart" column in the paint book.

The part nos. for the paint are listed in the back of the paint book under "Air-Dry Paint" unless the color is an '08 or newer in which case it's on the h-dnet.com; HD's intranet.

Good luck with your project.

I would think twice about getting the factory paint. That color is a tri-coat, there is a base and also a topcoat. Plus you need the hardner. Price is pretty high also. I shoot that color all the time with PPG, it is a pretty good match right from their formula. If you have any other questions just send me a PM.

yup ppg is all base clear and if its a tri coat they will have the numbers.. A good painter will prolly be able to do the fairing with a half pint of eahc color. Id use regular ppg clear anyway as I find the H/D stuff to be soft compared to PPG.. The other thing to look at is what color primer they use under the base coat .. Believe it or not it makes a big difference.. Ive learned a bunch about painting the harley colors and if i ever do it again it will be a satin color or just plain black ..
