08 ultra performance upgrade
I am military stationed in Washington currently deployed for the third time to Afghanistan. Last year when I was here I ordered my first fuel injected bike. This time i am buying my upgrades. I retire in two years and will be living off the bike for a month or more as I unwind all over the US and Canada.
Ok, to the point. I have been reading on the different upgrades available for breather, exhaust, fuel management for the last year. After a lot of reading I have decided to use Bub 7 true duals exhaust and the big sucker breather. To be quite honest however I am lost when it comes to the fuel management. I believe I have narrowed it down to PC5 (maybe with the auto tune modules) or the SERT. My bike is a 08 ultra with California emissions, however I am not concerned with keeping it where it will pass California smog. I don’t make much green working for Uncle Sam. I'm not worried about getting every possible HP that can be milked out of the bike. This makes me lean toward something that will not require shop time and diagnostic tuning. I really don’t want to spend the money on labor if I can do the work myself.
Dependability is number one, performance and cooling is number two. Multiple maps would be nice for the cross country long rides so I can lean it out for mileage. From all of my research the PC5 fits the bill the best.
I guess my questions are:
1. Will I have any complications installing the Bub 7 TD and Big Sucker being this bike is a CA emissions bike?
2. Is there a significant advantage to using SERT over the PC5?
3. Is the install for the PC5 the same on a CA emissions bike as it would be on any other ultra?
I'm having trouble with these questions because there is not a lot of information on the CA emissions bikes and I don’t know what all that option entails. You can insert dumb azz doesn't know his own bike here if you like. As much as I hate to admit it that statement is partly true. My shop manual doesn't cover much on the differences between 49 state and CA ultras, and nothing on modifying the CA Emissions bikes of course.

I just (tonight) installed a PC V on a 2009 Ultra with California Emissions. I also installed Monster Oval slip ons and a Screamin Eagle air cleaner with a K&N filter. Everything was plug and play. The air cleaner was no different than a 49 state bike. The PC V clicked right in. One possible complication was that there was not a lot of room forward of the battery to push the PC V wiring harness. I had to jockey things around a bit, but it did fit. I belive that there may be a few more wires and hoses in that area due to California emissions, but it did work. If you replace your entire exhaust with a true dual system, I don't think you will encounter any problems. One cool thing is that the PC V comes with plugs to cap off the O2 sensors, since the PC V does not use them. So, you won't have to install the O2 sensors in your new exhaust, just plug the openings if they have them. If you elect to use the Auto Tune, you will need to install the wide band O2 sensors in your new exhaust.
The big Sucker might be cool, but I can guarantee you that the SE set-up sold by FuelMoto is a true bolt on with a California Emission bike. And the PC V was plug and play for me. I bought it through FuelMoto, already mapped. I've only gone for about a 25 mile ride (got back about 15 minutes ago), but it seems flawless. In the good old days, I would have been darn proud of a carb tune as crisp as this right out of the box.

Hi Troy, I put the same parts on an 09 Ultra through our Canadian winter. all was plug and play. The Big Sucker is a nice clean setup, looks and fits well on the Ultra and uses the original football cover. I put the fuelMoto AC on my wifes dyna and also nice easy setup. Not sure of the Cali emmissions but I do know that there is not alot of room in front of the battery if you have ABS. Very tight for the wire harness but with a little perserverince you can get it in there. I do not have the autotune. really wakes the bike up and I would say is probably the best bang for the buck that I have done to my bikes.

Thanks for the input. I will have to contact the manufacture to be sure that there will be no problems with the big sucker. I don’t think that there will be. The response I received Rkoetting leads me to believe that there is no difference in the AC between CA emissions and non CA emissions bikes. If anyone knows for sure I would appreciate some input.
As far as SERT and PC V is there any large advantages from one to the other?

A good point about the ABS, I have it and that may have been more of an issue than the California emission regarding the limited space in front of the battery. I looked into the Big Sucker, and don't anticipate any problems regarding Calif. emission, your choice! I don't know about the SERT, but my PC V with the FuelMoto map is very well dialed in. Putted around about another 100 miles today. Mileage is going to suck, because it is just so much fun to twist the wrist now!
