I always turn the bike off with the ignition. That way I don't risk leaving the lights on.
I think that's the way The MSF course tells you to do it also.

Good point

On my '08 I turn the ignition switch on and cycle the kill switch three times and it works every time to reset things. I've had to do it a few times in less than two years.

Can you give us readers examples of when you would want to kill the engine with your hands on the bars, besides just turning off the bike after a ride?

The only time i would think of killing the engine would be if I laid it down and it was still running.
The first thing I would do is hit the brakes without thinking.

OK,stuck throttle.......duh!

The problem happens when you roll the throttle posisiton slightly forward while hitting the kill switch. The cure is to simply remove your hand completely from the throttle while hitting the kill switch.

What I've seen several times and worked for me was 4 cycles with the ignition switch to reset.

You may want to use the kill switch when...

- Stuck throttle. Yes - the clutch works too, but has the disadvantage that your throttle remains stuck until you get the engine off. Clutch is always a good way to remove power to the rear wheel.

- You lay the bike down and can't get to the clutch.

- Your clutch cable breaks!

etc....

It's good to make it a habit.
