Default inspecting cam chain tensioners

hey guys, has anyone used the spring clips shown in manual to hold up the lifters when pulling cam support plate. or is it easier to just pull the lifters...really hate to lose one down the bore!!! I need to check shoes on tensioners..getting a tapping noise more than usual in top..going through things one by one to locate noise..seems to be coming from left side after engine warms...only 8600 miles , but seems never can tell when these will go /wear through, thanks... Rob

I saw a pic somewhere where someone used two magnets that looked like washers tied to a short string..pretty slick..

but a binder clip is cheap and you can get them just about anywhere.

or you could just find you a big binder clip and use the handle part out of it. I did that and it works fine.

I used a nail to hold back the tensioner after pulling the cam cover and a dental mirror to inspect the rear tensioner. Didn't need to pull the cam plate.
