Default Question on Cam Chains/Cam Gear Change out

I have an 01 RK with 28K miles. I am thinking about changing out the cam chains to an S&S Gear Drive. A local small shop told me I also had to install a Power Commander, which I thought was completely wrong. I am not really crazy about putting in a Power Commander, I have heard some bad stories about them. Any thoughts on this.

First you'll need to check your crank rounout to make sure it's within spec to go to gears.

I answered my own question by just reading the S&S Catalog. If I install the stock cams, but gear driven, there is no need to change anything with the EFI, and certainly not install a Power Commander.

I take it you got an 88 with the original cam tensioners?

I've got an 88 and my plan is to convert to the new hydraulic tensioners.

From what I have read, going to gears has it's cons like more noise. I think the kit comes with new cams which require new lifters and a tuner. They say it up's the HP, but that's only good if that's what you are looking for.

Yeah, that S&S catalog is a good thing. Be careful with it tho, the urge to chase more power may come over you....

When I switched to gear drive and a new intake system I considered the Power Commander or SERT but the dealer told me the 01 RKs came with the Magnetti Marelli EFI and it wasn't compatible with either. Do you know if your EFI is Magnetti Marelli ?

If you were going to be putting in a new cam, why put in a new stock cam. why not take the opportunity to add some performance while you are in there?

The way they explained it to me, no. They said the best they could do with the M&M was adjust the air and fuel mix manually and check it on the dyno for performance eval.
