Default de-tach tour pack help!

I have asked the question already but no response so I will try again. I have a 96 Ultra classic and i want to be able to remove my tourpack but everything I have found only goes back to 1997 and doesnt include the 96 yearmodel. I have not had any luck with my local Harley shop but I am sure someone here has done a removal kit on a 96 or could tell me the difference from a 97 to a 96??

I would appreciate all feedbackand sorry I had to re-post this but I cant find my answers..

I put the detachable mounts on my 96 RK. I used all the same parts for 97 and up and found an older style tour pack mount. What I found was that the mounting points on the 96 were just a little wider (I think I remember that correctly) but you could make the detachables work it was just a snug fit. I had a tourpak and the detachable backrest. I use both the backrest and the tourback rack on my 08.

When I put the mounting points on my 96, I left everything loose and test fitted the rack/tourpak several times to get the best fit. Seems like I may have just rearranged one of the washers to make it just a little narrower.

Sorry to be so vague, it was several years ago but the 97 and up stuff did work with a little patience on my 96 RK. Good luck.

97 kit will definitly work with a tweak or 2. I took the origninal tour pac mounting bracket and modified it to be a quick disconnect as well. A little cutting, grinding and welding and it is good to go.

Should be able to use the newer kit for mounting points and any rack. I put a detahc kit on my 94RK way back, and my brother bought a 97 RK, and we were able to mount the rack to his frame by moving one of the detach points slightly. The frames changed in 97, that might be why they only list back to that year. In fact, I have the same rack from that old 94 now mounted on my 08 FLHX, just used the correct detach points/dock kit and it fits fine. I can tell you the old style rack (what you mount to the tourpack) is different now, but I do't see why it won't work correctly, as my old style works fine now....
