In reading the various posts on oil topics and specifically, transmission fluild, it appears to me that the transmission fluid for our bikes doesn't need to be motorcycle specific since there is separate fluid for the primary/clutch. Is this correct?

 

Id bet any good trans fluid would do and your correct the trans, engine and primary all are separate.. What your are looking for is a good quality gear lube that wont break down and will help quiet the noisy transmission gears... IE: bananna peels ,saw dust or possibly Quaker oats ... The Quaker oats also doubles as a radiator sealer if you have a V rod..

The others have picked up on your apparent misconception. "Transmission fluid" is a term that is commonly used when people are referring to automatic transmissions, as in automobiles. Harley Davidson motorcycles don't utilize that kind of transmission. Harley's have "gear boxes" as "transmissions".

Use gear oil in a gear box, and further, my advice would be, don't buy into the "Syn3" hype from HD. It's not full synthetic, and it's not a gear oil. There are lots of discussions here on recommended lubricants.

 

That's what I use and would suggest to you.

The primary needs a bike spec oil (JASO MA rated) to make sure it has no friction modifiers..the crap they put in car oil to get MPG but screws up the clutch in a FUBAR way.

The engine, I use Mobil 1 V Twin oil, but there are many other quality synths out there, and there are people who run cage oil in their bikes too. YMMV

I've used Redline Shockproof Heavy and Amsoil 75w90 in my gear box.
Both work well and quiet 5th gear a bit too.
Any quality full synthetic gear lube should work just fine.
The Redline looks a little funny like pepto bismol , but is a favorite around here.

That is correct. It needs to be Redline Shockproof Heavy. It might be difficult to find over the counter, but you can order it online. I bought a gallon because with shipping costs included it wasn't that much more.
