The cam tensioners need to be checked on bikes up to '06, but don't let that scare ya, just keep it in mind… for instance, if you’re looking at a bike with 50k on it and you ask the owner about the cam chain tensioners and he gives you that look like your speaking a different language, you may either want to walk away or consider the cost for replacement in your mind as a part of the bike cost.
As far as mileage goes, as long as the bike was properly cared for, you should be good. Check the tires, rotors (any shimmy when stopping), and other wear items that you need to factor into the price. And, if you don’t do your own wrenching, these can add up in a hurry… and you don’t want to sacrifice you safety because you spent all of your money on the bike. Remember a $9000 bike that needs two tires, brakes, etc... is NOT a $9000 bike.
The other thing is to be patient and broaden your search area. I have found that craigslist has some really good deals, especially if you don’t mind driving a little… look via state or neighboring cities. I was in the same boat as you about 5 months ago. I passed on several bikes (or didn’t get there in time), but ultimately found a mint ’06 Electra Glide Classic with just over 5k on it for $13,500.

Beau...while I have no tensioner advice, gotta agree whole heartedly that there are some GREAT deals out there. GF and I had been looking for maybe 3 days for an Ultra Classic witout much hope of finding a deal, when we stumbled on an '08 on Craigslist w/5,200 miles for 16 even. Got exactly what we wanted around 3 large UNDER what ones with more miles were selling for in Atlanta.

I was always concerned about miles prior to getting my EG. Then learned about some guys I rode with they had over 100k and we all headed out on some long trips, never an issue. I do have me EG up for sale, I'm to new to post on the classifieds though.
Any way good luck on the hunt. Hope you find what your looking for.
