Default Road King Stereo Suggestions

want to put a stereo on my King and have been looking at the speakers that go on the handle bars that you can plug a mp3 or xm unit in to. If anyone has done this what speakers do you recommend and what kind of set-up is the best...pictures would be great too......thanks

I have the XM radio that Harley sells installed on the handle bars as well as the 2 wheel tunes bullet speakers. The set up is ok under 50 mph, but over that the sound gets too drowned out. If you make the volume too high the speakers distort and sound like crap.

Im trying to find a solution to this problem myself that doesnt include me wearing a helmet with bluetooth/speakers installed.

I went with Polk DB521 5 1/4" speakers in my lowers with an amp from ebay with a RCA patch cord for my Ipod. I got the hogtunes speaker kit for the lowers just the kit not speakers. It sounds just fine to me.

I went this way because I didn't want anything on my bars.

Cost

Speakers 90.00
Hogtunes Kit 107.00
Amp 35.00 came with that RCA patch cord
Lower 200.00 off ebay just had them repainted

I put 3M Lock-It Velcro on my dash, a piece about an 1 1/2 long. and ran the 3.5 mm end up just above my seat.

I think your best option for quality sound will be a detachable fairing. There are now many vendors selling them. I have not read about anyone being happy with the bar mounted speakers for higher volume listening.

I built my own detachable fairing from HD OEM fairing parts and a standard RK windshield. I put the same audio set up as Lockshop in it. Small 50 watt RMS amp and two 5.25" speakers tied into an iPod. It sounds good, and I can hear it well above 70 mph even with my semi-loud pipes. Sitting side by side, my set up sounded better and louder than my friends '03 UC with upgraded speakers (no amp). You don't have to spend a fortune for tunes. My set up ended up around $350 including the fairing but took some work to put it together.

The one problem is I don't want to ride around with a fairing all the time, that's why i got the RK. If needed I switch to the iPod with ear plugs.

Where is your amp located? Is that crash bar fairing a Harley accessory or aftermarket? How much does it cost?

I have an 05 RKC.
I just added the Rumble Road Ultra speakers on the handlebar, with the Pioneer portable XMp3 radio attached to the left control. After listening to quite a few setups, I found this setup to have terrific sound, and the portability was a bonus. I like the fact that the satellite radio has the ability to record 100 hours of XM / Sirius channels, and also holds 8gb of Mp3 tunes.
Of course any satellite radio will work for you.

When I crank these speakers, they are loud, and clean.

Here's an idea how they look on the bars. Some people like them, some don't. I like the sound in my face.
I tried them on the bars, but felt as if the sound was too far away.

Here's the mount with radio:
