Default Running Hot???

Not sure this is the right post? But here it goes: I have a 95" motor on my Street Glide which I installed new last October. I was told that the bigger motor might run a little hotter and it would be a good idea to install an Oil Cooler since it gets pretty hot here in nevada. I recently installed a Mcgewen Oil Temp Guage from Wally's and have noticed the bike once up to temp will run about 220 to 240 degrees aprox. This seems normal to me and is similar to the other HD's I've owned. Nevada is wide open country so extended speeds exceeding 75 mph are common and this is where the problem is, at long distances of speeds like 80 mph the temp kreeps up to 270 or 280! Outside temp was only 85 and soon we will see the 90's. Checking the oil level is top of full. This worrys me a little. The bike runs fine and has never gone into Over Heat Mode. However if I slow down or stop the bike will come back down to 230 or 240. No lower Fairing or any other air obstruction. I run a PCIII and the bike has been Dyno Tuned with the air/fuel mix on the money.

Any Thoughts??? I appreciate any help!!!

The MOCO's oil temp gauge that I installed says (instructions) normal is 230 degrees.. Too much rain so I haven't ridden with it yet. A cooler will probably drop oil temp 20 degrees and synthetic another 10 (unless you are already using it)..

I am currently running Syn3 Synthetic and have since 1000 mile service. I will probably install the HD Premium cooler.

I installed the HD Super Premium Oil Cooler last night. I'll post the results after this weekends high speed ride!

Your problem may be the Syn3 oil you have in your engine! Having used synthetic oil in my HDs for over seven years, I can tell you that Syn3 oil is nothing but water! I know many people in my HOG group who used this oil and had many issues! I have used Amsoil for many years and my oil temp never went over 220!

You'd mentioned oil cooler. This is good, but it's only effective above 50mph. It doesn't help you much in a long stop-and-go traffic. The only thing that helps a little is the engine fan HD is selling for $400. It supposed to cool your engine by about 20 degrees!

My bet is still on a good quality synthetic oil.
