Exclamation Oil leak -- oil cooler

Hi all,

I just got back from a 2000 mile trip and have a severe oil leak on a 2005 Ultra. Oil had been blowing back all over the bottom of the motorcycle and it was a mess when we got home from the trip. I ran out of oil on the trip and put a couple quarts in to get us home. It looks like most of the dripping is coming off the front end around the oil cooler. I thought maybe the filter was loose so I put a new one one and made sure it was tight, then noticed the hoses from the filter to the cooler looked like they slipped a bit. I did reinsert them and made sure they were on and tightened the clamps. Took her for a ride and still have the leak, but not as bad. I am going to take off the oil cooler and see if that solves the problem. If not I will have to take it in for a look.

A couple questions...Has this happened to you with your oil cooler? Did you remove and fix the problem? Also, if this does not fix the problem by removing the oil coller, is there a way to pressure test the engine to find the leak?

Thanks in advance

If it's the HD oil cooler I would pull it off and get 12056-05 $4.99 (gasket service kit) and if needed 12056-05 $35.01 (rubber oil hose service kit) and then reinstall. Should solve any leak issues.

+1 on Dawg's post. Make sure that the gasket is rubber and not paper. I had a 'paper' gasket on mine and it leaked until my mechanic finally made one (each gasket service kit he opened had the useless paper gaskets) from rubber. No more leaks.

I took my hd HOSES TO THE auto parts store and matched it up to high end compression hoses.. no problems and hoses are a bitch to get off so no worries about clamps even though I did put on new stainless steel clamps

Why not degrease the oil cooler and surrounding area then warm it up and look for the leak?

Sure it's not a leak from gasket? I had that and replaced gasket and fixed problem. Hoses shouldn't be a problem if you got them on right, imho.

If the leak appears to be from the cooler area, why change a part in the filter head if youre not sure? If your hoses were bad replace them with new clamps, and to check your cooler if leaking, remove it, block off one side, apply about 5-20 lbs or so of air pressure (just keep it below max oil pressure) and put in a bucket of water.
