Default How Hot Do You Run?

Do you know what your oil temps. are? I have changed out the mufflers (V&H 2" Slip-ons), installed a Stage 1, had remapping and use 20W50 synthetic. I do not have any pigging; however, the 103 runs very hot.

On two consecutive 144 mile round trips with the OAT indicating 85 degrees on the outbound legs, the oil temp. gauge indicated 264 degrees both days. On the return legs (same route); the OAT indicated 102-105 degrees with an oil temp. reading of 298 degrees both days.

I was considering installing a Parade Fan but am now rethinking that because the above trip was all two lane and interstate with speeds ranging from 45-80mph and no stop and go! My reasoning tells me that at those type of speeds a parade fan would not provide much additional cooling to be meaningful.

All input will be deeply appreciated!

Jim

Since I installed a PCIII on my Ultra it rarely runs over 230 degrees.

Wow that is running hot 298 degrees.
Time for you to buy a TTS Mastertune or another tuner of some kind also look at a Jagg oil cooler there unit is made in the US and works very well. My bike is a 103 and runs around 180 to 230 depending on weather conditions with a SERT and 6 row vertical Jagg oil cooler.

I put the oil temp gauge on my bike about three weeks ago now. I'm averaging around 230 most trips with it varying between 200/210 to 240/250 depending on the situation. I've got a Jagg 10 row on order but haven't received it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of difference it makes. The outside temps around here are starting to creap up. We've been in the upper 80's to low 90's and that's the warmest I've ridden in so far. I am starting to notice the exhaust heat on my right leg down where the rear cylinder pipe bends forward and then turns to join the front cylinders pipe. I imagine I'll be "encouraged" by this to look into some kind of EFI reprogramming once we're fully up to summer temps around here!

An oil cooler will help you out a lot. It dropped my peak temps about 20-30 degrees.

Get a good tune done as well, sounds like you are running lean which will bump the temps up a lot.

My 07 Ultra with HD cooler and TMAT on her the 103 Big bore runs at 230 degrees as normal temp.... If I push her hard she will climb to 250-260.... Also have the SE Air Cleaner, 4" SE Touring muffs with 2" Fullsac baffles so the engine can and DOES gitty up!!!!! Running Mobil 1 syn,, not the Syn 3 blend...

My TC96 with Fuel Moto Power Package and SE255 cams runs as high as 205° in hot weather while moving, up to 230° a few times in the past two summers while stuck in traffic with ambient temperatures >90°. If air temps stay <75° the oil will remain at the thermostat spec of 185° while moving.

Yesterday it hit 87° and on a 100-mile ride I ran 190-205° the whole day. I have an HD Premium oil cooler which helps greatly to control oil temps, and I believe all TC engines should have an oil cooler of some sort (e.g. HD or Jagg). Synthetic oil helps, too.

What doesn't help my engine heat is that I'm also running lean AFR's in the cruise range (14.5:1) so I'm near stock in the ranges I normally ride. As a safety net I have the PCV-AT connected to a switch and I can toggle to the installed rich base map at any time on the fly. So in heavy traffic I can switch and be assured that head temps are running cooler. I find that it takes a very long time for oil temps to react to richer AFR's, so once you're running hot the only practical way to lower oil temps is to get moving again.
