Default Air Filters and Rain

I've got a Roland Sands Designs air filter on my Road King. As you can see from the picture, it's one of those with the element exposed. Shortly after getting it, I emailed the Roland Sands company and inquired as to whether they had a rain cover for it. Their reply was that I would have no need for one. Well, now I've got a Poker Run coming up next week and the forcast is for Isolated Thunderstorms. I'm a little concerned, to say the least. Should I be?

I have the heavy breather and I have been caught a few times in light rain in the past 2 weeks. I havent put the cover on it, but wondered if I should. They dont really specify when you should put it on.

My A/C is open like your RSD, but it has even less of a cover than yours, basically a round K&N bolted to the backing plate.....I got caught a while back in a down pour. the bike even sat in it for a couple of hours before I rode it, no issues

I have had HyperChargers on 3 different bikes. Been through some pretty heavy, can't see anything, rains with them and never heard a cough.
I think Roland Sands is probably right.

That's what I was hoping to hear, Brett. There's a breakfast before the poker run and a barbeque after, so there's a good chance the bikes will be sitting in steady rain for quite some time. When I emailed RSD, they pretty much felt it was a non-issue. Between you and the company, I'm feeling more at ease now. Just somthing about that filter element sitting out in the rain that freaks me out.

i agree, i have had them on past bikes and never had a problem. i even used to use a syringe and squirt water down the carb throat and it would steam up when it hit the piston tops and knock deposits loose.

I got caught in a long DOWN POUR with the SE Heavy Breather on. I also leave the rain cover on it all the time and had no issues. But i did have a softtail with a K-N on it no rain cover when it rained hard the bike would sputter.

I had the same question and did some seaching on the net. The best I could find was that if it's oiled appropriately, then it should shed the water from the rain. If it's dried out, then it may suck in some water and sputter.

Don't have mine on yet, but that's what I found in my search.

I keep my cover on all the time too. Had it dynoed and did a run without the cover on. No
noticable change in the A/F ratio line, which I had been woundering about. After 16kmi the filter and intake look like they've just been taken off ths shelf.
