Default 09 Road King Handlebars; Heritage Style replacement

I currently have the 56902-08 Heritage-style bars on my 09 Road King Classic. Has anyone tried the 56569-09 bars which are now stock on the 09 Heritage Classic.

The specs show the 09 as having a little more height and pullback. It is difficult to tell the true effect of the dimensions without them being mounted on the bike because the two bars having slightly different shapes.

The 09 version has an inside rise of 10 versus 8.5 for the 08. The 09 also has a very slight .3 inch difference in the inside rise and the outside or tip-measured rise. The 08 has a 3.5 inch difference, going from 8.5 at the bend to 12 at the tip, meaning that the angle of the grip portion is more severe.

I am just trying to get a handle on what the difference will be when sitting on the bike without having to mount them first. Just sitting on a Heritage Classic will only tell me about the wrist angle but not the reach when mounted on a Road King.

Bars that come stock on Softail Heritage Classic's will not fit your 09 RK. The 08+ touring models (such as yours) have throttle-by-wire, and require handlebars that accomodate the twist sensor. These bars have notched ends on the throttle side... Non-touring models (such as the Heritage Classic) still have cable throttle and do not have the notched ends in the bars.

Are these the Heritage style bars for '09 Touring bikes that you're replacing? I don't have the measurement numbers on them but they're HD P/N 56902-08 bars made for installation on TBW tourers and I was considering buying a set.

RangeRat - those bars make a lot of difference. The stock RKC bars require a rider with monkey long arms to sit upright. These allow a regularly proportioned rider to sit in a head up position and reach the bars comfortably. All stock cables, wires, and etc fit without alteration. I love mine.

Cool Thanks much for the info I am short in posture and I was looking at these on the catalog last night.

Are they the same height just back a bit?

Honestly I am not sure just how different they are. I know I have a posture when I throw a leg over a hog I put my hands out where I expect to find the hand grips and usually there they are. The stock RKC has the bars probably 6 inches ahead of where my hands reach, therefore I have to bend forward at the waist and put my head down between my shoulders - not the best posture for riding. The 56902-08 Heritage-style bars allow me to sit straight up in my preferred posture.

I am taller than you 6'2" but even with a 34" reach the stock bars are quite a ways forward for me. HTH They are worth a try. I bought them without being sure they were right for me but they turned out perfectly.

Thanks for the good info BigG. BTW - also 6'2" and had this same problem with my '07 FLHR. Went to WideGlide mini-apes on it and they're perfect for me but won't work on an '09. I'm thinking STRONGLY about trading my '07 in after the '10s arrive though. Therefore I want to make sure I can find available replacement bars rather than go through that pain again until someone makes some decent alternatives. These Heritage clone bars seem like a great option that does fit with TBW etc. so my concern has been addressed - trade is looking even "gooder"

Steve

Default Thanks for the comments

The Heritage style bar on there now are the 56902-08 which are made for the touring bikes. I didn't even think about the stock 09 Heritage Softail bars that I was considering being unable to fit because of the TBW. Thanks, it saved me some effort. The Heritage style bars that I have are close but I guess I'm just looking for perfect. I would just like to be able to sit back about another inch or so.

I wonder how the Harley Fat bars or the Wild One 513 mini apes might work for me.

Get a service manual to go by for removal/install on the bars, or borrow one.
With a hacksaw for the end of the handle bar tube, you can duplicate the notches in the new bars for the TBW. For the hole to run the wire through , you can use an angle grinder or a bench grinder to create a hole, just go slowly and you will be fine. A marker to be sure of where to grind helps, and a round file to finish up the hole , flat file to finish up the notches if they are too tight the first try. I like my heritage bars on my 08 RK.

Take a look at that link I provided. I think these new Heritage clone bars are all ready to go for '09 touring bikes because the pic shows a hole in the base leg for wiring:

...plus the text says:
Designed to provide extra touring comfort for the Road King® or Road Glide® rider, this 1" diameter polished stainless steel bar has 3" more pullback compared to the stock Road King® handlebar.

Fits '08-later FLHR, FLHRC and FLTR models with stock ABS or non-ABS brake lines. No additional cables or lines required.

Product ID: 56902-08
