Did 300 miles on Monday with my buddy who owns a 97 RK with 70K on it. His bike runs like a top and has never had any major issues.

I really believe the key is all three holes every 2,500K.

One thing about the bike (I bought mine pre-owned as well) that may be a consideration which has nothing to do with year or model is the sales tax. In Nevada at least, if you get it from a Dealer, you have to pay sales tax...If you get it from a private party, you do not. It added $1K to my budget, maybe it would yours as well.

Ok, but my wife is gonna have a problem with one of them..but if you're sure it will keep the bike in good shape, I'll go for it!

Watch for the FLHTC models that have the new type of faring removal by unscrewing the windshield screws, 2 screws in the inner faring below the speakers, and the 2 screws, one beside each fork. The brackets that hold the inner faring break constantly. I have a 2006 and have had to replace them 5 times. Harley finally came out with a reinforced bracket this year, but of course, would never admit the original ones were defective.

I don't know how long this new bracket with last either.

Thanks for all the information.

Nice break down on the bikes JohnnyQ.

In Minnesota we pay tax on everything, dealer/private party, they get you when you register it.

I agree with what somebody said.....97-02....the 99 had the MM EFI and it is junk...I switched my bike over to a Carb when it started acting up....This next winter i will be replacing my harness with a 04 and bolting on a Delphi unit. So i can put on a pciii.

Agree with Tom, but this is not any specific year. It is an issue on all batwings that I know of unless it has been resolved in 09.

It's an easy fix...and would suggest that whenever the fairing is removed if it hasn't been done I would add reinforcing material to the weak corners whether they are broken or not.

There are couple of threads addressing this.. I would search "brackets" in the search function.

I'm not sure there is a bad year, but my 02 RKC with a stage I will run rings around my 09SG without a Stage I.
