Default gas gauge on 02 flhtc w/ carb

Hi guys. I have a 02 FLHTC with Carb. Gas gauge needle bounces all over the place when the bike is running or you are sitting on the bike not running but moving the bike around. I think the gauge in the tank is causing the problem. Anybody have or seen similiar problems?
Yesterday while our riding with close to a full tank you would have thought the gauge was a geiger counter and I was on 3 mile island.

It could be the float in the tank. This is the first I have heard of this kind of problem but I doubt it is the only case.

Harleygoodies,
I know it started acting up last year during the fall and back then I pull the sending unit out and if you hold it steady in a position when out of the tank and connected to the wiring harness and power the bike up the gauge sits steady

Mine does that too, except when tank is full, or close to empty. I just figured it's the float bouncing around from fuel sloshing in the tank. Doesn't appear to be an issue to me anyway.

Yip, got a 00 EGC mine does it when it gets close to half a tank and below. I had the tank apart 2 weeks ago to change out the filter, every thing looked fine so I put it back together. I don't want to start buying parts hoping it will fix the problem. The low fuel light works fine and I keep an eyeball on the miles per tank, I'm going to live with it.
