I'm wondering if there is a trend we can see. How did you guys who are loosing oil break-in your 1000 miles? Hard? Easy? When did you do your first oil changes and did you switch to a different brand of Oil?

No adding oil between changes on my 98, 07 and 09. Are you sure you were filled before you left, and are you checking the same way each time, hot or cold etc ??

You might want to have one of your riding buddies ride behind you to see if they can see any hint of smoke or smell oil. Get on it pretty hard after it is warm and you should see some hint of smoke if you have a bad ring or valve. Have you pulled the plugs yet? If it is using oil, it will likely show up here as dirty plug(s).
No, it should not be using any oil between changes. Good luck.

That sounds right to me. My '07 used oil for the first 5k miles. I've got 25k on it now and it doesn't use any oil at all.

Possibly after 5000 miles the engine is mostly broken in, the rings and vales may seal better after that.

Take it out and run it hard with someone behind you, do your 30-60 hard roll on’s hitting 4,500 rpms each time… stay in 3rd gear and let the engine break the bike back to 30 mph then hit it again back to 60 mph… do this 10 times to seat the rings…

If its still using that mush oil and or your buddy smells or sees smoke take it in while it under warranty.

09 Ultra here....I don't add any oil between changes. I had a small oil leak, or so I thought. The dealer fixed it...turned out to be gear oil from the transmission from an improperly installed (by the dealer) braided steel clutch cable.

I totally agree. Using a quart of oil in 1000 miles is outrageous. However, this is not the first time I've heard a manufacturer use those numbers as a standard for what's "normal" and what's not. I'm sure it's a wonderful excuse for them to not correct a problem that has the potential to be expensive to fix.

My 09 Ultra has 7500 miles on it and it hasn't used one drop as far as I can tell looking at the dip stick.

Good luck with your bike!
