Default 17 6.25 rear or 18 5.5

I'm going to purchase new rims and tires for mt 09 FLTR. I was told by Phil at Hogpro to go with the 17 6.25 on the rear, cause it would accept the 200 mm tire better.Makes since, but I need as much info on this set up as possible, front and rear.

Thx for bringing this up. I too talked to Phil last week and he explained those two options to me also, although he didn't steer me either way.
I myself am steering to the 18"/180 just because the 17"/200 tire is a lower profile tire which creats a little harsher of a ride. So I think there is a trade off if you really want the wider of the two tires. I'm curious what other's have to say......Rich

I am curious about the same. I got a 09' RG and I just ordered the 17x6-25. I think the reason Hogpro is pushing the 17x6.25 is bcuz the 18 is back ordered and will take 3 weeks to a month to get it in. I believe the look will be great but you bring up a great point about the 17 being a low profile. I now am wondering about the ride how much will I be giving up....

Blast from the past thread... would like to get a update also. I went with the 17" 200mm but have not had a chance to ride it yet because the weather here blows right now!

went with the 18 200, against phils wishes. man is that clearance tight. just gives me an excuse to burn that 200 off quicker to put the 180 on.

i'm running the 17 6.25 with a metzler 200/50 17, bike is lowered with arnott air ride now but i rode it all summer with a 2" lowering block and the ride was fine. I have heard some complaints from guys that ran the 18" with the 200, most saying they had a lil rear end wobble. a couple have went back to the 180 with thier 18" and the wobble disappeared. fact or fiction i don't know

I don't understand how a 17 inch low profile would have a shorter sidewall than a 18 inch tire of the same overall diameter. Aren't you automatically losing 1/2 in. in sidewall height because of the larger wheel diameter?? Or are you gentlemen going to a considerbly taller 18 inch tire to make up the difference??

I went through that decision a few months ago... I was concerned with the profile of the tires and here is what i discovered:

Metzler's run 200/50/18 which is the Marathon 880 for touring. or
Metzler's run 200/60/16 which is the Marathon 880 for touring. or
Avon runs both 200/55/18 and 200/55/17 which are the Cobras for Harley customs or
Pirelli runs a 200/55/17 which is the Night Dragon...

so you can run an 18 with the same profile as the 17 with an Avon tire or a Pirelli... I personally went with the Night Dragons... Pirelli owns Metzler you know... maybe thats why they make sizes that one another does not make??? I wanted the extra profile to try and maintain my ride and made my decision based on that. I don't know if the 200/55/18 would fit so i went with the safe 200/55/17... same size on the SE fatboys in 06.

Hope that helps
