Got the King lowered and apes...and help?
Finally got everything done and back riding. Here's the brief rundown...put 11.5 Progressives on back, lowered front 1", chromed lots of stuff out, and went to 16" Wild One apes with all the goodies.
Forst of all, man, lowering really hepled and I am 6'1". Sure it takes hard bumps a little harder, but well worth the "feeling" or sens eof security I now get with it lowered, I just felt wobbly before. Plus, it looks cool.
Anyway, on my old sporty I had 12" apes, loved them and always wished I would have went higher, so I did on my King. Well, they look awesome to say the least! They are setting pretty much in line with the line/angle of the forks, a wee bit pushed farther. But...
Man, it is killing my hip! I am not comfortable sitting upright, how I normally lean back, kills my back! Now I plan on trying to push them forward more tomorrow, but I am worried it just won;t position me right. The only way I am comfortable is leaning way back using the guard pegs, with the floorboards I hurt. Think it being the half inch lower in back is affecting this too?
Whatta ya think, pushing them foward even more gonna help or do I need to take a big loss and try some other bars? I am just so disappointed as I have wanted these bars for so loooong.

I'm 6'2" and put 18 in apes on my Road King Custom and love it. Mine, like yours, are just a little forward of the line of the shocks. If I do long trips I use a back rest and it is the only way to go for comfort. Around town and short trips I don't use it. So you might at least sit on one with the back rest before you punt the apes.

I moved them forward maybe 2" and it makes a lot of difference. Gonna get used to it and go from there. Still hurting my neck and hip, so maybe this winter I will go to something else if it doesn't improve.
JSK, well I loved my old 12" on my other bike, thought 16" would be the cat's ***, but they are just a wee bit too big for me for the comfort thing. I slouch normally, now when I sit straight up, it makes a big difference, but I can't sit that way for long. Also, I tried setting on the passenger pillion and big difference! Was perfect for comfort and stretch. For the record I am either 6' or 6'1". With these bars my hands are a little above shoulder for how I like to set, I think if they were even one inch lower it would be so much better. Again, not sure if by lowering it the extra half inch in back is playing a part in this or not, but the bike feels so much better lowered. Now with my girl on back, I am totally comfortable, so the comfort bar issue could be maybe I need a backrest,b ut no way will I put one on. My bike actually had one when I got it and I gave it away! I am going to get a Corbin solo eventually so that might help as well, then the stock for 2-up will be ok.
All in all, I would have never been happy until I got these 16"'s, but next time I will go a different route for sure.

ScooterGuitar,
Thanks for the note. I will let you know when I get the bike back. It has been one thing after another I went ahead and let a local custom shop put the bars on and order the cables and what was supposed to take a week has turned into a month today. When I talked to them yesterday they said that they are waiting on one last part and it will be in on Thursday so I should have it back this weekend, but that is what they said last week as well.
Jeff

Jeff sure thing, posy when it's done and what you think. After my last post here, I went on an hour ride aroudn town and I tell ya, it's just adjusting yourself to them. Truly, moving them forward a few inches made a world of difference for me.
One note, when you get the bike, the cover is a real pain in the rear to simply adjust the bars! You basically gotta take off a lot of the front (light, cover, etc) to get to the clamp. I ended up driving it back to my guy and they did it on the spot, and it took them close to 30 minutes to do it. I suggest go to the shop if it isn't done.. sit on the bike, put your hands where you "think" you want them and have them do it. Then tell them if you don't like their position after their on, if you can simply go back and have them move them on the spot and not have to wait. I thnk after you ride it for a few hours, you should be able to tell about exactly where you think they should be moved the second time. As your riding and if you don't like it, just move your hand around the area of where you think it would be better and make a mental image. Hope this makes sense.
