Default HD Oil cooler changing oil question???

I have the HD Oil cooler on my 07 SG and was wondering, what is the best way to change out your oil? I don't know how you get the remaining oil out of the cooler? Do you change out the oil when the bike is hot? This way the internal valve would be open? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Cool HD Oil Cooler

I just changed mine at the 1000 mile mark. I warmed the bike up and changed it as normal. I don't think all the oil will come out of the cooler as the refill only required the normal 4 quarts. I think the cooler is lower than the hoses so it probably retains the oil that's in it. Shouldn't be a problem though if you change your oil on a regular basis.

Try the Scavenger oil removal system if you want to get all the oil out.

Just changed mine again recently. The oil cooler was installed by the previous owner. I did notice a fitting in one of the lines to the oil cooler, that had what looked like a drain plug bolt. I didn't try opening it for fear of introducing air into the lines. I just did the normal oil change, between 3.5 and 4 qts.

I do the normal change too every 5k with filter. I put 3.5 qts. of fresh oil in and it reads properly on the dipstick. A bit of old oil remaining in the cooler and sump will not hurt anything.

You don't think that you get ALL of the oil out of the engine when you drain it do you? I hope not.

If you use the Scavenger and have a cooler without a thermostat then you'll be able to get all the oil, not that it's a big deal.

The amount of oil left in the cooler is negligible. It wont hurt anything. There is probably more oil left in the case of the motor than what is left in that little oil cooler. Don't worry about it and ride.
