Here is my question. Seems like the clutch now engages much later in my release than previously. In other words, the friction began 1/2" away from the grip before, now friction begins 3/4" away from the grip.

Did I do something backwards?
need a clutch adj.already?

Have not screwed with any adjustment except at the cable. As long as I have free play at the handle I know it's engaging..never have any problems.
If no free play at the handle then the clutch is "slightly engaging / slipping"

In the clutch forum it describes a much easier clutch adjustment method that works every time for, the first time. Loosen the clutch cable all the way. Hold clutch lever to handlebar and turn in adjustment screw until you feel the lever start to come up off the bar. Back it off a bit and do it again. Do this a few times to zero it in, than back off the adjust screw 1/2 turn and tighten everything down, and adjust cable. It should be dead on. And with a properly adjusted clutch you should feel it start to engage or drag at approximatley 1/2 to 1 inch from the bar as you release. I like it at 1/2 inch, gives me more control for feathering or slipping the clutch in tight turns.

Awesome, thanks! I'm going to try this next time.

Please answer this. To get the clutch to engage at 1/2 inch from the bar instead of 1 inch, do I back off the adjuster nut 1/2 turn or 1 full turn? Service manual says 1/2 to 1 turn, but gives no more explanation.

Think of it this way. As your clutch plates wear they cause more looseness or slack from the adjusting screw, causing your clutch to start to engage further and further out closer to when the lever is let out. To take up the slack in the clutch pack due to wearing clutch discs, you screw the adjusting screw in towards the plates until it makes contact, than back out a hair. I like to back it out 1/2 inch, sometimes just a hair less than that. Than tightn up your cable untill there is about 1/16 play that you can pull out on the end of your cable at the clutch perch. But I am use to a tight clutch from racing motocross.

But I will be the first one to say I am not an experianced gear-head. I just followed the directions I found in the clutch forum from a tech. Ofcoarse any adjusting to your clutch to make it tight you do at your own risk.
