Default Help with throttle cable !

Hi Gang,

Picked up my painted inner fairing for my 2006 ULTRA , and now comes the fun !!

I have almost everything disassembled, ( wasn't too bad ).

The almost part that is puzzling me, are the throttle cables in the right side switch housing. I managed to get the cables released from the handgrip, but can't get the cable housings out of the switch housing.

The service manual says to just twist and pull them out, but I don't feel comfortable pulling/twisting any harder that I already am.

I squirted some WD40 into the housing. It looks as if there is a rubber-like groumet that holds it in.

When it finally comes out, does that rubber looking groumet come with the cable, or stay in the switch housing ??

Does anyone have a tip / trick / secret for getting the throttle cables out of the switch housing ?????

Thanks in advance !!

All you can do is twist and pull, they will eventually let go. No rubber grommet that I'm aware of, just a little retainer ring thingamabob. You may have to fight to get them back in too, they can be stubborn.

just twist and pull. that's how it's done. it's scary until you yank it out and realize that's how they were designed.

Just give a good downward tug. Very small retaining ring that secures them.

Yep just pull em out. Mine were a little tough to get out, but went back in real easy.

I've tugged , pulled & twisted until I think I'm gonna break the housing !! It still won't cut lose. Can the 'retaining ring' be cut off and replaced ??

Try re-attaching the switch housing to the handlebar, loosen the cables using the adjustment nuts under the rubber boots, then twist/pull the cable housings to free them from the switch housing.

It's pretty difficult to hold the switch housing in one hand and pull the cable housing in the other. Also, if you haven't done so already, buy a couple of the brass ferrules that secure the cables in the grip--they are easily lost; HD part no. 56508-76

I did mine a couple of days ago and this worked for me.

Good luck with your project.

Well, after pulling so hard that the metal sleeve of the cable separated from the piece that goes through the switch housing,...............I was able to grab those 2 little suckers with a pair of pliers and pull them out. What a PITA !!!!

The color on my NEW GLACIER PEARL WHITE painted inner and switch cap looks AWESOME. I think that the black guages will be the perfect contrast to this set-up.

Thanks to all for the suggestions !! I'll repost when I CAN'T get it back together !!!
