I bought a cheap "cap type" filter wrench from Autozone and customized it with a hack saw to fit my EVO Road King. There is a sensor in the way.

It can't POSSIBLY be any messier than the ways I've already tried. There's an aftermarket drip tray that fits under the filter - really bad; I manufactured my own sheet metal drip tray, which was so far the best method but still dripped onto the engine mount; and aluminum foil, which provides LOTS of places for oil to hide and drip out in new and unexpected places.
Just make sure you hold the mouth of the bag up close to the bottom of the filter mount so the oil runs down into the bag and give it a second to drip.

Metal end cap for a few bucks here as well. Works perfectly. I took a new filter into the parts store with me to ensure proper fit.
